Gay Scene Guide for United States
LESBIAN AND GAY UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
In contrast to Europe, some people might argue that the USA has gone backwards in the past ten years on lesbian and gay equality, due perhaps to the resurgence of the religious right that took hold under the Bush Presidency of the 2000s. But there are still a lot of reasons for lesbian, gay and transgender travellers to come to the USA. Note that you must check out visa requirements first as these are very stringent, especially for people coming from countries that the US believes are a terrorist risk: and travellers who are HIV+ need to be careful what they disclose too.
Where to go and where to stay:
Different states have different laws, and while some states actively legislate against discrimination towards lesbians and gay men (e.g. Massachusetts), others legislate against same-sex relationships – so again, you might want to check this out before deciding where to go. Generally the gayest cities are on the West Coast (such as San Francisco) or in the North East (Washington DC, New York and Boston); while the southern states like Alabama, Texas and others may not always be so gay-friendly. However, Miami in Florida has a thriving gay scene so even this is unpredictable! Be sure to check out the various cities on Gaygetter before you plan your itinerary.
